The MICT SETA partners with industry, Universities and TVET colleges (both public and private) in the delivery of respective learning programmes in its endeavour to address identified scarce skills. Its commitment to expand and improve provision of skills development for SMMEs and rural communities will contribute towards addressing the requisite skills immeasurably. Credibility of the data used for skills planning and partnering with stakeholders in scoping their skills development needs and priorities remains a priority for the SETA. This will ensure effective implementation of demand-driven learning programmes that serve as effective bridges into the world of work.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: END USER COMPUTING

Purpose And Rationale Of The Qualification

The purpose of the qualification is to build the knowledge and skills required by learners in End User Computing. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently in the End User Computing environment in the South African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment.

The qualification provides a framework for learners to develop skills that will enable them to become competent in End User Computing. It introduces theoretical concepts of End User Computing and requires the application thereof, to develop a range of skills that will enable learners to be better-informed workers in their chosen industry. It provides a balanced learning experience that lays the foundation for access to further education, life long learning and to productive employment.

A qualifying learner will be able to:

  • Competently apply the knowledge, techniques & skills of End User Computing applications in the workplace.
  • Understand the impact and use Information Communication & Technology (ICT) in an organisation and society.
  • Improve Communication by combining communication skills with End User Computing skills.
  • Improve the application of mathematical literacy in the workplace, by better utilising applicable End User Computing Application

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Purpose And Rationale Of The Qualification

The purpose of this qualification is to build a foundational entry into the field of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, specifically into the field of Systems Support, covering basic knowledge needed for further study in the field of Systems Support at Higher Education Levels.

The qualification can be acquired in the traditional way of formal study as well as in the workplace, through learnerships. Acquiring the qualification through learner ships has the potential of addressing the problems of the past, where newly qualified people getting into the industry struggled to get employment, because they were required to have practical experience. The workplace experience can now be gained while acquiring the qualification through the various learner ship schemes that are planning to use this qualification.

A Qualifying learner at this level will be a well-rounded entry-level Systems Support professional with a good fundamental knowledge of the Information Technology field, coupled with interpersonal and business skills, allowing for specialisation in one of the following Systems Support fields:

  • Hardware and Infrastructure Support for Personal Computers
  • Hardware and Infrastructure Support for Office Products
  • Data Communications and Networking
The qualification is designed to:
  • Provide learners with an entry level for further study in Information Technology and related fields, as well as for initial employment in the computer industry
  • Provide a foundational qualification for people who are pursuing a career in the computer industry, or related fields. People with this qualification have an introductory level of understanding about computer industry concepts and/or are able to work in areas of Information Technology with little technical complexity. Examples of the areas covered are entry-level hardware, software, electronics and network support, on mainly (but not limited to) desktop and hand-held devices and local area networks.

NATIONALCERTIFICATE: SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

Purpose And Rationale Of The Qualification

The purpose of this qualification is to enhance readiness and provide entry into the areas of Systems Development at NQF level 5. It prepares learners for entry into the workplace or as undergraduate study in the Systems Development areas covered, providing them with the necessary knowledge needed for further study in the fields of Information Technology and Computer Sciences at Higher Education level.

A qualifying learner will be able to communicate effectively with fellow IT staff & users of information technology, understanding the role of technology in a business context and to be able to address business problems with appropriate information technology solutions. Learners will be able to apply the principles of creating computer software by carrying out, under limited supervision, a task of reasonable size to demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge, techniques & skills needed in one or more area of majoring/specialisation that the qualification offers.

A qualifying learner at this level will be a well-rounded IT professional, building on foundational technical skills acquired at NQF level 4, via the National Certificate in IT Technical Development or equivalent. This qualification is expanding the systems development foundation started at NQF level 4 into specialisation fields within systems development, in one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Procedural Programming.
  • Object Oriented Programming.
  • Fourth Generation Language Programming.
  • Web site development.
  • Multimedia.
  • Electronic Commerce.
